Many people have faces that look gaunt and drawn. They have depressions in areas like the temples and cheeks. If you’re one of these people, you may be in search of a solution. Unfortunately, topical applications like anti-aging creams, lotions, serums, medication, and other products can only do so much to help improve facial gauntness.

We experience facial gauntness due to a number of factors, including stress, the sun, and various environmental factors. The aging process also causes this issue as a result of the gradual loss of fat from the facial fat layer.

We all have unwanted fatty deposits in areas of the body like the abdomen, arms, thighs, and buttocks. What if we could transfer the fat from certain areas of the body where it is undesired and put it in other areas of the body that need more fat?

That’s exactly what you can achieve with a facial fat transfer. With a facial fat transfer, you can put excess fat to good use.

What Is a Facial Fat Transfer?

A fat transfer is a cosmetic procedure that uses a person’s own body fat to fill in facial irregularities, depressions, and grooves. This is a great way to help restore fullness and volume to a face that has lost its youthful look.

This procedure is also known as fat grafting, fat injections, and lipofilling. It involves harvesting excess fat from areas like the buttocks and thighs, purifying it, and then injecting it into the face in spots that look sunken and lack fullness.

Why Do People Come In for Fat Transfers?

Common reasons for undergoing lipofilling include a sunken jawline and cheeks, the nasolabial folds (deep grooves running from the corners of the nose down to the corners of the mouth), and lines at the corners of the eyes and on the cheeks. Fat transfer is also one of the most commonly used methods for the enhancement of the lips.

The necessary fat is obtained by doing limited liposculpture through one or several very small incisions in spots like the abdomen and the inner thighs. The aspirated fat is processed by centrifuging. From this, we end up with healthy fatty cells that are ready to be injected into the face.

The rendered fat is then injected where required. The fat is evenly distributed by injecting minute amounts. It should be surrounded by healthy tissue; this will ensure that the transplanted fat remains in contact with the surrounding tissues for a proper supply of oxygen and nutrients.

The Results of This Procedure

A facial fat transfer provides:
• Correction of facial folds and deep wrinkles
• Correction of depressions and dents
• Volume augmentation of the cheeks, cheekbones, and chin
• Improved quality of the overlying skin

After the body absorbs a certain percentage of the fat (between 20% to 50%), the correction is considered permanent.
